I am analyzing nucleotides from TCA-precipitated cell extracts by HPLC coupled to UV detection (270 nm) and there is an interfering peak coming from the TCA itself. I have tried some sources of TCA and the peak is so far always there. Does any one know any pure source of TCA with low UV absorbance? I have tried different sources: Scharlau, VWR and Sigma (Bio ultra). The height of the peak differs but it is always there (it is lowest in Scharlau, although Sigma-Bio Ultra is supposed to be the purest of the three).

The contaminants are likely due to the preparation method, otherwise decomposition. I'm unsure about purification

I am pretty sure that the contaminant come from TCA since if I do exactly the same extraction without cells, the peak is still there and if I replace TCA with TFA, it disappears. Then I started to look for TCA sources with low background absorbance but the background UV absorbance is very seldom given by the suppliers.
Maybe you can try TCA from Biosolve - they are quite well known to provide high purity materials for analysis
