This is a specialty of the dental profession, but are we using the proper name? should Stomatological Medicine be considered as well in the English language?
We are many times referred to as Pathologists, do you consider this to be so and why?
What do you consider this field does or must do?
Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine sounds good and also specific though a bit of a mouthful.
May be by simply calling Oral Medicine they are giving status comparative to MD in Internal Medicine?
The published name of the specialty, used for recognized dental specialties by the American Dental Association, is Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
In Nepal we have 3 different specialties: 1.Oral Medicine and Radiology
2. Oral Pathology
3. Oral and maxillofacial Surgery
We had a dept of oral pathology and diagnosis. There is including oral medicine and oral radiology. we wish oral radiology can be independenced
asap.
I belive that oral and maxillofacial pathology is better.
But Oral medicine & Radiology is one specialty and Oral Pathology is another
Oral Medicine is more clinical and Oral Pathology more lab-based. They are different in practice. One can check the history of Oral Medicine in Britain.
Oral pathology is lab-Based and different from Oral & Maxillofacial Medicine.
I have been reading the answers and find the interesting.
I realize in some countries "Medicine" seems to mean the same as "Pathology" but in many places -as stated- the firth refers to the clinical aspect and the latter to the laboratory -microscopic- aspect, jst as in the meical profession.
I also read that in some cases Medicine is united to Radiology and...
... considering radiology studies are a base to diagnostics, it can be understood, never the less, as science advances, many branches achieve sufficient "jurisdiction" as to become independent(this is the base of sub-specialties).
I have 2 friends, an oral physician and and 2 oral surgeons that also made a postgraduate in oral and maxillofacial radiology, but, should it by radiology or imagenology? Consider that echography, thermography, MRI are techniques that can be applied but do not imply ionizing radiation.
