I would like to improve some old ecopath models that have no bacteria compartments in estuaries where we lack information about bacterial production. I would be interested in your advise about using other data related to microbial activity like enzymatic activity or metabolic rates in order to seek for good data sets.
Hey Natalie, I am actually looking into the same thing, so it would be interesting to see what answers you get. I haven't really thought more about it than that. Have you looked at the old models that I made in South Africa? There was some bacterial production in there, but the data was limited. Sheila

Yes, I've included them in the comparisons we made (Niquil et al 2012), as they correponded well to the criteria we had define as comparable models (Johnson et al 2009). But nom we have a set of models from French estuaries that I would like to add to the comparison.

I think it's not question for discussion in general, but - some real ecosystem...

I think the challenge is really to be holistic from procaryotes to top predators. The challenge is also to look for ecosystem based indicators. Those presently proposed in Europe by Bruxels are mainly based on top predators: we really need this complete integration for discussing their quality for integrating the whole food web.

As you know procatiotic ecosystem machine can works without other organisms but eucariotic machine can't work without first. Top predators are more commercially important for us and of cause they are more vulnerable. They are good indicators but really so often their importance for ecosystem functioning are overweighted. Procariotic machinery is base.... parasites and predators can play very close roles.
If you are interested we have a set of data on microbial metabolic rates, see Puddu et al. Hydrobiologia 1997 , Zoppini et al Sc Tot Environ 2005, Pettine et al Est. Coast.Shelf Sc, 2001) and more recent data still unpublished on the Adriatic Sea and Cilician basin (Turkey)
