Somewhere I heard the term used for uncertified research and in a derogatory sense. I am not sure what it is. In a time when knowledge is also segmented along well-established lines, the easily available 'online' publications make a researcher publish her research but do not ensure the quality. So there is a dilemma. Can one clarify the things for me?
Grey research means the research that is unpublished or published in a non-commercial form. They include:
- government reports.
- policy statements and issues papers.
- conference proceedings.
- pre-prints and post-prints of articles.
- theses and dissertations.
- research reports.
- geological and geophysical surveys.
- maps.
- newsletters and bulletins.
- fact sheets.
Most of the grey literature are of good quality. They are good sources of current research. We can get so many good worthy articles of these kinds in relevant areas from the internet and they will be worthy in our research also.
Grey research may be the research conducted using grey literature . Grey literature that is often discussed with reference to scientific research .Grey literature is generally defined as academic literature that is not formally published.It is by no means restricted to a single field .
Sometimes grey literature and published literature can be linked. I remember a text of George Lakoff which has been quoted a lot before being available in a commercial publication. The problem is to refer to a source which is not available to your readers. They can choose between believing you or not; this does not mean to judge by themselves.
