In the early age or during the school days, certain compulsions or motivations were behind the learning graphs of ourselves. However, what, precisely, is that which keeps us motivated to learn at this age or stage of being a grown-up individual as well as a teacher-researcher? What motivates one to keep on learning even in old ages? Even after the retirement from the teaching and research positions!

Personally - Curiousity. Boredom. Frustration at problems that have not been solved.
Developmental theory - Levinson's theory tries to cover age 45 to death, so it isn't useful here. I am not a particular fan of Erikson's stage concerning age 65-death (ego integrity vs. despair), but it does have some traction in the literature. Levinson's late adulthood stage gives at least the distinction between transition and stable periods, but it mostly seems concerned with physical state and plans for death and does not say much about continued intellectual growth (which makes sense, since it is basically Jungian and Jung considered death to be the ultimate goal). There is a similar problem with Neugarten's coping and aging theory. Vaillant's theory concerning generativity, becoming keeper of the meaning, and achieving integrity has more to offer here. If I were pushing at this topic, I would probably see who has been following Vaillant.

My personal motto is to learn something new every day!
For me its learning about new knowledge to inform my discipline which includes workforce development and educational technology. Just recently I was just bold over when I discovered that I can easily convert a PDF file to a Word file by just inserting the file into a blank 2013 Word document. The computer gives you message that it is converting the file and you click OK and then boom! I did not have that capability before, so this was just an awesome learning experience for me that motivated to learn more about the 2013 version of Word.

IMHO
Only research can encourage you to read and learn more. Try to find a gap in knowledge around you and search for the answer. Some time is also good to teach higher level classes like post grad ones, the requirement of the course also forced you to learn extra while preparing for your class.
Also angst, depression, sorrow, love, affection, greed, anger and all kinds of things you do not understand inspire you to puzzle your head with possible answers.
