I have been dealing with Feeding Ecology of Fishes for the past 4-5 years and have a fairly large dataset of 17 species with a total of nearly 1000 guts. Of course, Anova analysis of diet composition especially with variation in season doesn't deliver the desired outcome. I was wondering whether this could be answered with Permanova, and if so, then how?

The way to do it is to treat the diet data as ecological data (variables = prey item categories, samples = fish or preferably groups of fish, entries = % gut content or whatever) and then to use the vast range of multivariate methods appropriate for the analysis of such data.
