The list contains the pKA for phenylsulfonic acid (2.1) which is very likely to approximate to the pKa of styrene sulfonic acid (SSA). You can therefore assume that SSA will be negatively charged at physiological pH. Based on my experiences with this compound, the swelling behaviour of SSA containing gels (I have not prepared pure SSA gels before) correlates with its relative molarity in a system where the overall hydrogel molarity was kept constant, further supporting that it is negatively charged (as it imbibes more water with higher charge density while the total polymer content /network density was kept constant). We have also confirmed this using EPIC-uCT which showed nicely that the negative charge density increases with increasing SSA concentration.

Acid-base equilibrium may possibly occur, between polystyrene sulfonic acid and sodium polystyrene sulfonate, with a connected hydration (hence swelling) effect: (CH2CHC6H4SO3H)n + nNaOH ↔ (CH2CHC6H4SO3Na)n + nH2O.
