Can anyone point to any good and recent references on virtual prototyping and integrated modelling and simulation, where 3D visualisation is considered?

I am after flexible frameworks to integrate subsystem models (mechatronics models in particular) which originate from different tools and domains, and to link both 3D visual models and numeric behavioural models. Loose coupling is essential, and I wish to support multiple, alternative models, for instance to allow variation of the compute power/precision trade-off.

Clearly, many people have done this kind of work with concrete model instances, but very often at great cost to adapt models to ensure compatibility. There is also quite clear how it should work, in theory, from a software engineering viewpoint. I see quite a bit of activity 2008-09 within the Modelica community, but I have not been able to find a mature statement on how to do it in practice.

So, does anyone know, what is the state of the art?

TIA
