Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a measure of how much oxygen dissolved in the water - the amount of the level of free, non-compound oxygen available to living aquatic organisms. It is an important parameter in assessing the water quality of a river, stream, or lake. Is the permissible limit of Dissolved Oxygen constant or differ to different uses of water like drinking, bathing, irrigation, industrial use, etc. in Indian rivers?
There is no such thing like permissible limit of dissolved oxygen in the water.
But yes there is a minimum Dissolved oxygen concentration required for the survival of aquatic life i.e. 4- 6 mg/l. The higher the amount of oxygen in water the better the water is suited for living beings.

There is a limit for DO prescribed as per the CPCP's 5 class classification (A-E) of surface water bodies. The DO level is prescribed for all 4 class (A-D) but not for class E, i.e- for Irrigation, Industrial Cooling, Controlled Waste disposal.
The following prescribed limits of DO as per CPCB may be recommended.
Class A- Drinking Water Source without conventional treatment but after disinfection
Dissolved Oxygen- 6mg/l or more
Class B- Outdoor bathing (Organised)
Dissolved Oxygen- 5mg/l or more
Class-C-Drinking water source after conventional treatment and disinfection
Dissolved Oxygen- 4mg/l or more
Class D- Propagation of Wild life and Fisheries
Dissolved Oxygen- 4mg/l or more
Class- E- Irrigation, Industrial Cooling, Controlled Waste disposal
No prescription for DO but other parameters are there
The permissible limit level of dissolved oxygen in most rivers, lakes and stream that required for most aquatic organisms life is at least 5mg/l .
Drinkable water should contain DO value ranges 4 - 6 mg/L . The values are ideal and support healthy life in the ecosystem.
