I would like to know peoples experience of techniques used for measuring the adhesion of agglomerated crystals (or corrosion product films) on steel substrates. Which techniques are the most reliable and which are best suited to this particular application?

There is a lot of information in the literature on the strength of barnacle attachment to substrates. They do this by means of an organic based glue (sometimes called a cement). Although you are looking at a inorganic crystal the techniques used to measure adhesion barnacles may be useful. Start by looking for work by A. Clare.

Gert - the film im interested in is very homogeneous and is formed via precipitation onto the steel surface. Its similar to CaCO3 scale on pipework in a sense. Its pretty stable once formed.
Fe from the steel of the bulk solution, but it is not a direct reaction, it is precipitation
