Strongyloides stercoralis and Hookworms are hard to differentiate what is most distinguishable characteristic of the two that differs them from each other?
Hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis can be distinguished from one another on stool exams by their tail morphology. The filariform larvae of Strongyloides have a notch in their tail, whereas the hookworm filariform larvae have a pointed tail.
The hook worm has large buccal capsule whose edge is armed with teeth at ventral margin, its anterior extremity is bent dorsally, size 10-16mm, obligatory parasite.
the strongyloid has striaght anterior end, size 2-3mm, facultitive parasite
It is possible to differentiate the two species from agar plate culture and by microscopy. Furrows left on agar plates by larvae of S. stercoralis and hookworm are seen using dissection microscope or naked eye. The tracks left by S. stercoralis larvae were characteristically much thinner than those left by hookworm larvae on the agar plate culture. In microscopy, S. stercoralis and hookworm larvae are distinguished by considering their buccal cavity and tail regions of the larvae. The buccal cavity is short in S. stercoralis larva where as long in the hookworm larva. The tail region of S. stercoralis is short and notched whereas the tail of hookworm larva is long and pointed
