As a result, research into the epidemiology of hepatitis D infections presents challenges.

Test kit quality variations, which are about differences in the detection and ability to identify the antibodies for Hepatitis D Virus (HDV), can lead to inconsistent results when testing the individuals. As a result, this can affect the accuracy of estimates for the prevalence of HDV and make it difficult to detect patterns of transmission. A test kit with low sensitivity may fail to detect HDV antibodies in infect people, thus underestimation of HDV prevalence. On the other hand, a test kit with low specificity may result in false-positive results and result in an overestimation of HDV prevalence.
