PC-3 and DU-145 cell lines are Androgen-insensitive and growth is similar like they grow as colonies. In additions, PC-3 and DU-145 cell lines also taking the form of islands bearing polygonal cells predominantly adorned in monolayers, with elements in the center piling-up on top of one another . But morphologically, DU-146 cell line looked to proliferate more rapidly compared with PC-3 cell line.
PC-3 and DU-145 human prostate cancer cell lines are the "classical" cell lines of prostatic cancer. PC-3 cells have high metastatic potential compared to DU-145 cells which have a moderate metastatic potential. PC-3 cell lines were originally derived from advanced androgen independent bone metastasized prostate cancer. PC-3 has low testosterone-5-alpha reductase activity and expresses PSA. DU-145 cells have moderate metastatic potential compared to PC-3 cells which have high metastatic potential. The DU-145 cell line was derived from brain metastasis. DU-145 are not hormone sensitive and don’t express PSA.
PC3 show characteristics of poorly-differentiated adenocarcinoma. They have features common to neoplastic cells of epithelial origins, such as numerous microvilli, junctional complexes, abnormal nuclei and nucleoli, abnormal mitochondria, annulate lamellae, and lipoidal bodies.DU-145 cells have less potential to form the spheroids as compared with PC-3 or LNCaP, other human prostate cancer cell lines.
