I am hoping to determine the mass per unit area (as per DIN 50938) of a black oxide coating. I use water to achieve the required 1mol/l hydrochloric acidic solution, but a fellow lab had used methanol for the dilution. What are to be the expected differences between the two methods?

In this standard method, you have to use pure 1 mol/l hydrochloric acid with a commercial inhibitor added, the inhibitor being chosen so that the loss in mass, m1, determined as specified in a subclause, is less than 0,5 g/m2. An adequate inhibitory action is achieved, for example, if a 4 % (m/m) solution of hexamethylenetetramine, C6H12N14, in 1 mol/l hydrochloric acid is used.
