Psychologists are specialized on human actions and behavior. But treatment of problematic behavior is only a very, very little field of what a psychologist does. In first place a psychologist researches. And the object he/she observes are humans. From human behavior several questions arise that might be trivial. And it is not at all only about individuals that show a problematic behavior, but also about daily actions and reactions people show. Biological psychology is interested in researching the interaction between soul and body. Social psychology is interested in relationships and group behavior. Developmental psychology studies the process of change people undergo and deals with growth and transformation how it naturaly takes place. Problem solving is researching how people solve problems.
So psychology in first place creates knowledge about humans.
The treatment and modification of behavior is practical. And for this it is a practical profession that stands on the last line of work a psychologist can do. A psychologist is a scientist and not a therapist that heals people. Indeed many psychologists are not into healing or intervention. And their aim is not to study phenomenons in order to help someone because psychologists are nice and friendly beings but to gain knowledge. Indeed the practical application of knowledge is only a result that follows being adapted on individuals. And the application is not always said to be positive in order to help someone. You can also use it negative in order to manipulate and gain power.
Psychology fosters better understanding between people. It is the only medicine that opens the eyes of a person to understand the feelings, attitudes and behavioral makeup of others.

Dickson, really nice answer. I honestly wished it was like that. It should be like that that we just used knowledge in order to do only good. But universities are really missing some moral education. In so many cases the medicin becomes a poison. But I appreciate your view. Let's never stop believing in good endings.
