What is the importance of loading rate of diesel oil while determining the concentration ?

We are doing toxicity experiments on marine organisms using the high speed diesel oil (HSD). However we find difficulty to determine the concentration of hydrocarbons to derive LC50 and chronic values.

While doing the preparing Water soluble fractions (WSF) of high speed diesel oil, the concentration of total hydrocarbons (THCs) could not be determined linearly when we plot.

What are the suitable and good references available for marine environment?
