There are several open source softwares like 'Fiji' which is an extension of 'ImageJ'. Fiji contains inbuilt features suited for processing and analysing data from several branches of science. Please follow the link below:

I use Photoshop, select and colourise. For large areas use quick mask mode. I think that there is no 'fast' route, it needs to be done carefully. Have a look at some of my efforts on my LinkedIn profile page

You can try `micromanager`, a relative of `ImageJ` . It is solely devoted to microscopic image analysis.

I am using photoshop also but the reason is I am using this program for different purposes and I know it. 

is the answers are related to the false coloring of sem images? it is very complicated procedure using photoshop. Is there any other easy method to do false coloring?

Hi, It would be nice if one can use BSE (back-scattered  electron) images instead of SE images because BSE images are very sensitive to the atomic no of the different element present in the test material. it's easy to make the colorful image out of that, for this first you have to convert the original image into a gray scale image and then by using any imaging software you will be able to assign the different color for the different phases. I am using ITEM software to get the colorful image.

Francois, that looks like a very interesting product. I see they have a trial version. Have you experience with using this package?

There are many free software. I am using fiji /image j and its working good. the use of this software depends on your usefulness and need.
