If we imagine a sheet, any essentially 2D object, we have an intuitive word to convey that the sheet wants to contract: "tension". For example, when we stretch out a bedsheet, we place the sheet under tension, and it wants to contract. I am looking for a word to convey the opposite, a "desire" of a sheet to expand. For example, a pancake when fried expands due to the egg in it, so what would be a good noun to describe that it is under "negative tension"?

For 3D volumes, the word is obvious: pressure. A pressurised volume wants to expand. But the word "pressure" is deeply connotated with volumes, and I feel it does not accurately describe a proprensity of a 2D sheet to expand.

I am looking for a word "The surface is under X" that will intuitively convey that this is a 2D surface that wants to expand.

Any suggestions?
