I have a qestion about the implementation of the XRF to determine the thickness of the NiP -Cr coating on a stainless steel (1.4305). According to the TDS of the base Material, it contains both Ni and Cr. I made multiple measurements in one spot and results were ranging from 7 to 10 µm for a NiP layer. The measurement was done for a given base material, nevertheless it is difficult to guarantee that on this particular spot that I measure, the composition of a steel will correspond to the information from the TDS. I read in the literature, that it is impossible to perform an accurate measurement when the composition of the base material and a coating are overlaping. Does anyone have an experience in this topic? Or can anyone recommend another technique to establish the thickness of the coating?

I think to measure simple NIP coat thickness, XRF level a sophisticated instrument is not required. you can check thickness using DUELSCOPE FMP 100 appropriate for NIP coating thickness. Up to 68-micrometer NIP thickness contains 12 % phosphorus. It does not mean that XRF can not be used but it is not required because thickness level is high in NIP coat. XRF can be most suitable for metallic -intermetallic infusion thickness measurmeent such as Cr/Cu/Ni coating of 0.5 micrometer.
But, Hitachi XRF or XRF can be used for NiP-Cr coating on a stainless steel with XRF. XRF can be used to measure thickness on NiP-Cr coat on a stainless steel.

Dear Alexandra, if the sample is plane and smooth, you may try to vary the incidence angle of the exciting X-rays. Thus you may find the angle if incidence, where the metals that are not included in the coating (i.e. in particular Fe) pop up. From the attenuation length you may then calculate back to the thickness of the coating. But you need a plane and smooth sample and coating as well as an adjustable sample holder to do so ...
