As suggested, there may be many good benefits to consider in the papers provided.  I am not familiar with the amount of research in this subject, but had a few thoughts you might consider.  For good or not, may be an increase in soil black colors from adding and mixing in carbon black which may increase the ability of the soil to absorb solar radiation, perhaps a potential benefit in timing for planting crops. A downside may be if soil temperature increases are too great for some plants.  I have not researched this subject beyond a class experiment many years ago that looked at soil temperature changes in a laboratory setting relative to different soil colors and other factors.  

In addition, I do not know the details on carbon absorption or release of water, but organic matter can hold 4 times its weight in water, and certainly if this holds true for carbon black, it could be a mechanism to absorb water during wet periods and release it to soil or plants much later during dry periods of higher moisture stress, to the potential benefit of plants, crops.  If carbon black can absorb water quickly, it may help capture moisture from storms or irrigation before it it lost to runoff or to below rooting zone. There may be studies that could help confirm or question these remarks. The question is great to consider the potential effects and research potential..

I forgot to add this on the subject of methods, perhaps it will help or offer citations to review for content.  .  

Environmental relevance of carbon black in soil  should  be seen from various angles . Residence time of carbon in soil from biochar is many times more than the simple manures/composts/plant residues. The scavenging ability of carbon black in detoxifying the contaminated soils through much better buildup of non-labile fraction of soil SOC is perhaps the most discerning feature of carbon black.

From my limited understanding, we are talking about organic carbon and biomass.  I am not aware that carbon black, biochar, etc. might be considered or could include byproducts of pyrolysis of tires or plastics.  Perhaps some clarification is needed, and I hope to recheck this to see responses at some later date.

Hi Clement, your use of the term carbon black is its traditional use and excludes biochar.  The content of C black should be C and other stable combustion products, some of which might include carcinogens.  From tyres, there may be some Zn and Cd.  I'm not sure what else is added during manufacturing.   

As I understand,the appropiate term is black carbon,not carbon black( I can be corrected if both terms are synonyms) .Black carbon is a particulate carbon and air pollutant.Black carbon is a sooty black material emitted from gas and disel engines in transport sector,coal-fired power plants and other sources that burn fossil fuel.Cooking stoves,coke and brick making kilns are also sources of emission of black carbon.Black carbon has negative effects both in human health and climate change.More studies can be found on black carbon as pollutant and on health hazard .Dr.Arvind Singh  provided two very pertinent references and Dr.Mohsin provided another good reference.These references show the possibility to study the black carbon effect on soil ,soil carbon dynamics,as adsorbent for nutrient and pollutant elements and also availability of nutrients.It appears that studies on black carbon  are desired similar to biochar research.I compliment Dr. Clement for raising a new issue.The following brief notes give some information on Black carbon.

Commercial carbon black materials generally contain more than 97% elemental carbon with variable amounts of oxygen, hydrogen and sulphur. Less than 1% of carbon black particles consist of extractable organic materials. Typical classes of organic chemicals adsorbed onto the carbon black particles surface are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitroderivatives of PAHs and sulphur-containing PAHs. Examples of PAHs adsorbed onto carbon black particle surface include benzopyrenes, benzo[ghi]perylene, coronene, fluoranthene and pyrene (IARC, 2010). Several of these compounds are recognized as human carcinogens. Carbon black materials are categorized as acetylene black, channel black, furnace black, lampblack or thermal black according to their manufacturing process. Worldwide production of carbon black in 2005 was approximately ten million tonnes. Over 90-95% of carbon black produced is of the furnace type  and thermal black (decomposition of natural gas) follows at a distant second place . The acute toxicity of carbon black was evaluated in studies performed in rats by the oral route. The single oral administration of carbon black (Printex-140, furnace black) at a concentration of 8 000 mg/kg bw produced no deaths, and no salient macroscopic anomalies were observed at necropsy. Accordingly, under the conditions used in that study, the maximal non-lethal dose of carbon black after single administration by the oral route was higher than 8 000 mg/kg bw . In another acute toxicity study, carbon black (Spezialschwarz 4, furnace black) was administered once to rats by the oral route at dose levels of 6 350, 7 900 or 10 000 mg/kg bw. There were no deaths, and no salient macroscopic anomalies were observed at necropsy. Accordingly, under the conditions used in that study, the maximal non-lethal dose of carbon black was higher than 10 000 mg/kg bw .
