My group members and I are assigned to design the fiber rolls rack for industrial. Nowadays, the manufactures use the fiber rolls rack with horizontal design. So, our group decided it to change that design into vertical. It is because the old design it looks like non-economical and non-ergonomics. My group already design the new rack of fiber rolls that are vertical design. The new design it looks like more economical and ergonomics. It is because the new design it can be commercial to any industry that use the fiber roll and it easy for people to put in the fiber rolls into rack that why i said the new design is more ergonomics. After that, it can keep that rack at the place of the corner or the other places. So, I enclosed our group design that can be used in industry. I hope you can give the opinion for the design of fiber rolls rack.

First I would like to say that I know this problem (I live in a region of Spain closely related to the textile industry). I know this problem from an ergonomic point of view, especially related to awkward postures. Therefore, the "vertical" solution appears, a priori, interesting. In any case, I think it is essential a good ergonomic analysis at the design stage, considering specific methodologies that include anthropometric factors (in addition to market analysis).

Economics and ergonomics of a design can be well measured, i.e., these are not subjective in nature. You can always compare different design solutions based on these two measurements.

In deciding which is more suitable, we may need some additional information about the intention of the task. This example that I show here may be different from your case, but the example may give you ideas for how to assess your own. In this example, the operator is working on an "inspection" task. The re-design is intended to reduce risk to lower back (reduction of likelihood of lower back injury). In this example (see attached figure), the change to "horizontal" was justified when rollers were added (see bottom of lower figure 11.12 from book by Konz and Johnson). The rollers and horizontal design allowed the changing of position of the drum to be inspected, rather than the change to awkward position for the operator (in vertical - old design). Once additional information is available about the task in relation to the design, other RG colleagues may have additional insight.
