There are 2 phenol: choloroform: isoamylalcohol on market one has pH 6.7 and the other a pH of 8. What's difference between them and which is better for DNA extraction?
If it's DNA you want, use pH 8. The acid phenol variations are used to purify RNA (as DNA partitions into the organic phase at that pH). See the original Chomczynski paper for details (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2440339).
Oops, you are right! No idea, then. Still, most pH 6.7 offerings come with a bottle of buffer to mix and raise the pH to 8 before use; so my guess is that storing phenol at pH 6.7 simply increases its shelf life.
