these terms can be explained using the transport protocols in IP networks. The term "stream-oriented" is used here as a very general term. A stream can be a "stream of bytes" or a "stream of messages".

The two main types of protocols are:

• Byte-stream-oriented protocol or short byte-oriented protocol

The TCP is a byte-oriented transport protocol. In the case of TCP, a stream of TCP packets is transported and each TCP packet contains a sequence of data bytes.

• Message-stream-oriented protocol or short message-oriented protocol

The UDP is a message-oriented transport protocol. UDP transports a stream of UDP datagrams. Each UDP datagram contains a message (for example, a message from the SIP protocol or a message from the CoAP protocol in the IoT). A UDP datagram can also contain a special data block, which can also be considered as a kind of message.

Message Oriented protocols send data in distinct chunks or groups. The receiver of data can determine where one message ends and another begins. Stream protocols send a continuous flow of data.

Common protocols used on the internet are UDP (message oriented) and TCP (stream oriented).

In other word :

Message protocols are usually built over streams but there is one layer in between which takes care to separate each logical part from another. It parses input stream for you and gives you result only when whole dataset arrives and not all states in between.

Stream protocols send data byte-by-byte. You can view it as pipe where all going in on one side gets transfered on other side. It is task of other side to determine when it has enough data to make any sense of it.

TCP is a stream oriented protocol and UDP is a message-oriented protocol.

TCP receives the stream of bytes from application layer protocols and divide it in to segments and pass it to IP. But UDP receives already divided or grouped bytes of data from application protocols and add UDP headers which will become datagram and send it to IP, then application layers has the burden of dividing the streams of data in to messages when they run on top of UDP .

Good answers, although even UDP can also be used to send a steady stream of data. For example, if you check out Real Time Protocol (RTP), you will see that multimedia streaming also uses UDP, with each subsequent packet identified as belonging to a particular stream.

The fundamental difference is in the way layer 4 is used. It's true, though, as other colleagues have already said, that TCP is a byte stream protocol. If you're sending a finite block of data with TCP, such as an e-mail, then there is a very deliberate TCP handshake sequence to initiate the session, and then one to tear it down at the end of the transmission. So TCP is connection-oriented by nature.

With UDP, the datagrams are sent as individual independent messages, although you often do see some extra mechanism layered on top of UDP, for example, to make it more error-free. You might see sequence numbers, for instance, added as part of the UDP payload, so the destination can see if it has missed any packets. So the difference can get blurry, depending how much extra you build on top of basic UDP.

Here is an example with mobile phones. Text messages would be a message oriented protocol as each text message is distinct from the other messages. A phone call is stream oriented as there is a continuous flow of audio throughout the call.
