NS2/3 would be better if you want to modify the algorithms or the implementation as part of your research.
NS2 /NS3 are better in terms of availability and support. OPNET is expensive and student version may have limited functionalities. So better go for NS2/3
The student version of Omnet is not limited in any meaningful way. It has its own dynamically interpreted language for describing models and experiments. This language enables hierarchical model description which is much easier to comprehend than ns2/ns3. This allows a hierarchical method of assigning experimental parameters again much clearer than ns2/ns3. If tcp is the main focus of your investigation choose ns2/ns3 -- their tcp models are superior. Otherwise I would recommend Omnet.
It depends on your knowledge about these simulators. The full version of Opnet is kind of expensive if it is matter. NS2/3 are strong network simulators. Also, you can think about Omnet++. For me, that was easier for microscopic implementations and measurements. It has a user-friendly Eclipse-based IDE, which is easy to learn and use.
@Peter Newman.....Sir another very important point that goes in favor of NS2/3 is ...easy to find help and resources...plus open source....OPNET may be superior but comparatively less resources in terms of guidance and help

But for NS2/NS3, one should have very good programming skills.
But for Opnet and Netsim an average programming skills is enough to simulate your scenario.
NS2 is no longer used and active development stopped 7 years ago. So its best you use NS3 or NetSim or OPNET. And like you say you need to have lots of time and be very good at programming (in multiple languages) for Ns3.
I totally agree with Rahul. Ns2 is outdated. Right now NS3 is the most valuable and versatile simulator to perform routing.

I am a bit more interested in OPNET.
I think OMNet++ is the best choice.
- OMNeT++ is a C++ based discrete event simulator for modeling communication networks, multiprocessors and other distributed or parallel systems.
- OMNeT++ attempts to fill the gap between open-source, research-oriented simulation software such as NS-2 and expensive commercial alternatives like OPNET.
Advantages of OMNET++:
- Well structured.
- Highly modular.
- Not limited to network protocol simulation.
- Source code is publicly available.
- Simulation model for internet, IPV6, mobility is also available.

I used NS2 that was like 8 years ago, but now I would recommend NS3 instead.
Omnet has an extensive and well-written manual. NS3 has a well-written tutorial.
I would recommend NetSim (http://www.tetcos.com) over NS-3.
You have to difficult to learn TCL, C++, AWK, Python etc to get things done with NS-3. Both scenario creation and results need coding, which is completely GUI based in NetSim and hence much easier.
I would recommend you to use Mininet emulator (http://mininet.org/) rather than simulator because:
1) Now in network related research, the focus is more on the realistic traffic and scenarios and none of these aforementioned simulators are capable to do it!!
2) Network community is more focused on emulations now
3) Moreover, the chances of acceptability of your research work will also increase by the use of emulator
4) It's an open source emulator
5) More realistic network emulation is possible with mininet

MININET is used for SDN simulation only. It does NOT cover any of the other networking technologies such as wireless, sensor, mobile, adhoc networking .. etc
