I'm specifically referring to the following paper: JOURNAL OF BACTERIOLOGY, Apr. 2010, p. 1921–1928.
The group is trying to determine susceptibility of different P. aeruginosa strains to pyocins, and they conduct what they call "spot assays."
They apply the supernatant of a pyocin-producing culture to other strains and state that "Plaque formation was considered to be the result of lysis by bacteriophages, and clear lysis zones were considered to be results of R-pyocin activity."
So what's the difference between a plaque and a clear lysis zone?
