What is the best way to identify marine mammals using a hydrophone, and what is the best way to quantify its population?

Obviously PAM has its limitation but it can also be quite an amazing tool to study marine life.

Nonetheless I have trouble identifying which software, which method would be best suited to identify which sound belongs to whom? Let's say I have a large set of recordings, can I identify several species by listening to it, using PAMguard for instance? And if a specific population is detected, what is the best way to calculate its density?

Thank you in advance, I'm slightly confused with all there is on the internet and I wanted your opinions.
