As long as you just "shuffle" mean luminance will not change of the entire image.

A simple way if you use PhotoShop is with the “Scramble Filter” http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/product/Scramble

I recommend trying the picture game Fuzzpix, which can generate a gradually clearer video sequence of images of a face. It is on the App store and on the google play store as well.

Thanks Myron. Yes, all my stimuli were luminance-equated in SHINE. I just needed a tool to scramble the pictures taking different numbers of pixels of it. In the end I used Photoshop, so problem solved... 2 months ago!

Anyway, a bright young man you are (with many pubs, which I did not know, well done) and I am sure you would have figured it out, plus Carl gave a good reply to add to these.

I am only wandering what algorithm photoshop uses for random permutation and whether given enough repetitions you end in a loop.

That's a good question! I have no idea what algorithm does Photoshop employ, but for the experiment I was requiring this, it was enough by turning the faces into a completely unrecognisable picture with the face outline only.
