Dear Zorada, Isabelle Chemin is correct, it really depends on many factors. In my experience as a veterinary pathologist, many if not most guinea pigs tend to have acquired otitis media at the time of diagnostic necropsy. They have relatively large tympanic bullae and large tympanic membranes. Chincilla's are a great model for administering products because of their dorsal as well as ventral compartment to their extensive tympanic bullae system. However, their auditory ossicles differ greatly from people and people do not have tympanic bullae. Finally, the mongolian gerbil is the commonly used animal model for cholesteatomas (aural keratin cysts) which is commonly associated with otitis media in people and dogs.

Fine answer from Brad, from my side it seems that nobodies used non-human primate for this purpose but in the opposite use the knowledge of ear human disease to cure NHP in case of problem in zoo ;-)

And finally this latter one in which using larger animal like macaca, like the previous one, you can also use chirurgical approach together with the chemical one. But this sorts of model should be limited to a true pre-clinical assay.
