It will be difficult to get the normal ranges of concentration of growth factors since FBS is a natural product and there is bound to be variation from batch to batch. Also, the components in FBS will vary depending upon the health status of the animal. Moreover, there is going to be variations in growth factors depending upon the way FBS is handled and stored before it reaches the consumer. The commercial serum supplier will provide the Certificate of Analysis which provides full test results and information concerning the origin of the serum. Certificates of Analysis vary between commercial suppliers, but each usually includes the following details: filtration statement, country of origin, cell growth performance testing, microbial sterility testing, screening for mycoplasma and virus, endotoxin, hemoglobin, IgG and total protein assay.

Referring to your second question. Endogenous hormones in the serum may vary according to the gender. Serum can be rich in testosterone or estrogen. Serum may also contain high level of insulin. These hormones can enhance the growth of certain specific cells in culture depending on its abundance in the serum.

You might try to contact the supplier of the FBS product that you are using. They may have information about your particular lot number. Or if you are interested in particular growth factor(s) they may be able to supply you with a lot number that will meet your requirements. Some lot specific information may be listed in the package insert.
