Recently i was reading an article on SERS for bacterial detection, there i came across this work "Convective assembly method" for increasing the reproducibility of SERS signal. I googled it, but no straightforward answer. Can somebody please explain me in simple words.

The “convective-assembly method ” is a technique used to control assembly of nano- and micrometer size particles into two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) structures. The self-assembly of colloidal particles in thin evaporating films is the basis of the technique. During the assembly process, the small, nanometer size, gold or silver nanoparticles fill the voids around the large, micrometer size, latex particles forming a colloidal crystal. After the assembly process is completed, the latex particles can be washed from the surface with an organic solvent. The remaining porous three-dimensional structure can be used as a SERS substrate.
