Some research associates some diseases with either sleeping with lights on versus total darkness. This could be just a correlation without cause and effect relationship.
In your opinion; whicuis better: sleeping in dim light or total darkness?
Research speaking, I think we all agree that total darkness is the best setting. However, we have to remember that is does not apply to everyone. I have had patients that have been sleeping extremely well with a dim light. I believe it is about to find what is right for the person, like pretty much any kind of behaviour or routine.
Total darkness is essential as it helps produce the melatonin, needed by the body. Melatonin is produced primarily by the pineal gland in the brain which helps regulate the relationship with light and darkness, day and night. Sleep is believed to fight cancer, diabetes and weight gain, but it needs to be done in total darkness.
Sleeping in total darkness is contemporaneous with natural circadian rhythm as previously noted. However, the question: "which is better?" Is quite subjective. I would like to point out that sleeping in light may have some "correlations" with some diseases, however sleep deprivation is more detrimental. I am saying this because there are people who can't sleep without the lights on. In this case, sleeping in light would be better for them rather than not being able to sleep at all in darkness.
sleeping in complete darkness is better because it increases the production of melatonin; a hormone that is considered to cause a person to fall asleep better and faster.
Sleeping in complete darkness is important to getting a good night's sleep because darkness or night increases the production of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain and controls the body’s sleeping cycle. Melatonin is believed to cause a person to fall asleep faster and sleep better.
