I have a single-mode optical fibre that allows the 488 nm line to go through it. I know that in the past, the same optical fibre has been used for using other lines.
I have now several blue lines and I need to use the optical fibre to couple it with the scan head of our microscope. If for instance, the optical fibre was able to transport the 488 and 457.9 lines, individually, what would happen if I try to couple both lines at the same time?
By the way, I am only interested in the 488 line but I would be very grateful if any expert on optical fibres could clarify me this doubt.

i agree. This is called wavelength multiplexing. At the output of you fiber, if you want to separate the various wavelength you may either use a diffraction grating or alternate narrow band filters.
If some of the added wavelengths are below the fiber cut-off wavelength, more than one mode can propagate at those wavelengths.
Make sure that the spacing is not close to 12Thz otherwise Raman induced power transfer can take place between the two wavelengths.
If the two wavelengths are close, there may be chromatic dispersion. This effect depends also on the fiber length and the data rate (if you are using the fiber to transfer high data rate as in communication systems)
I agree with Hadrein. If two wavelengths are close power transfer and modal dispersion may happen.
If you close two wavelength, higher wavelength only propagate with high accuracy. If you want transmit two wavelength at a time means choose Wavelength Division Multiplexing Technology. Single Mode Fiber not propagate single wavelength only may by possible to maximum two modes or two wavelength with small dispersion. If you want reduce the dispersion increase space between one wavelength to other wavelength.
I don't see any problems here - can have some non-linear effects in certain situations, but this will not be a problem in your situation.
I think your wavelengths are far enough apart to avoid non linear effects. The only issue to me is how you plan to filter out the unwanted 457.9 nm line at the end of the system?

I made this question because initially I had curiosity in what would happen if you try to couple more than one wavelength into a single mode optical fiber.
Allowing the blue lines of my CW laser to be coupled into the optical fiber I just wanted to know what I was getting out of it. When I check the power of the beam I set my power meter with a 488 nm wavelength and I was wondering if I am measuring indeed something else apart from this line.
In the scan head of the microscope there is a beam splitter which allows the light going through for wavelengths over 485 nm, that is how I would get rid of the other line.
