I wish to determine microstructure of 17-4 PH stainelss steel sheet (annealed condition). What etchant should I use so that a clear microstructure can be found out ??
Almost any etchant is applicable.
For the macroscopic observation, try Aqua Regia. For the microscopic observation, try Kaling's or Behara's. I usually try aqua regia first, then move to tint etchant if a microstructural definition is not sufficient. The composition of the tint etchant possibly be optimized by trial-and-error approach :D
Also, if you want to see some specific portion of microstructure (i.e. delta ferrite), the electrolytic etching method using KOH or NaOH is applicable.
