When I contemplate the feeling of learning, I have 2 different impressions. The first is of a flash of light or an electric shock followed by a comfortable, gentle swelling of understanding. To me it is never the a hectic performance like an athlete and it makes me worry about our expectations of students in schools.

One learns by being able to discern from available information those parts of the available data that are salient. We learn by arriving at a clearcut view of what is important and worthy of followup.
The implications of our ability to learn is that we arrive at a position where we can make meaningful contributions to the betterment of society.
