Plastic which is rather problematic waste. It wil require prior consent by importing nations according Basel Convention s amendment but not between EU member states for example. EU also introduced broader regulation of 4 phthalates, DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate), DBP (dibutylphthalate), BBP (butylbenzylphthalate) and DIBP (di-isobutylphthalate) but didn t include some other also problematic phthalates. It regulates also some flame retardants like PBDEs but only to certain level which still allows deca-BDE to be recycled in new product for example. So my question whether it is enough and the regulation should not go further based on current scientific knowledge?
I think that certain plastics such as polyvinyl chloride should be banned for uses where it can cause a harm. This includes also flooring from soft PVC as it generates exposure to phthalates in dust for example. PVC is also problematic in waste as it can generate dioxins whe burnt etc.
Dear all, as far as the regulation measures should be tightned as strong as possible, meanwhile the authorities should put in service other available biobased alternatives in application. My Regards

In recent years, plastic materials have become one of the biggest issues for a health concern, especially synthetic made. I think we need to replace all that synthetic with other natural base plastic in life daily uses, in particular, that used in contact with foods.

I agree that the additives, plasticizers, pigments, flame retardants and residual monomers in plastics should be taken up for ban based on the emerging sceintific evidence. However, I think the plastic industry as a business also lobby hard to continue using chemicals for which replacements are less effective (in terms of performance) or expensive. Its a battle between policymakers and plastic industry to continue using the toxic chemicals or place immediate ban. In the end however, it takes years to see the outcome and the winner.

Ban for some additives reached global agreement under the Stockholm Convention. However this convention is focused on POPs. There are more additives like phthalates for which it doesn t seem they can reach criteria for POPs but they are also toxic. EU has banned some of them but they were replaced by another phthalates for many products. How to deal with these additives globally? It seems that even if phthalates were banned in EU they are still used in many other countries and it is almost impossible to control their use effectively. What do you think?
I am not sure here exist any simple answer. May be public pressure on producers of phthalates, or again ban of PVC could be a solution.

Some "older" phthalates like for example DEHP are replaced with new ones but it is not sure whether the "alternative" phthalates are safe or not. Current regulation of additives in plastics is not broad enough. See:

Toxic additives are now contaminating environment similarly to plastics, because plastic waste degrades and/or releases these toxic additives while being burned on waste dumpsites or landfilled.
