Plant Genetic Engineering :are plants used in agriculture, the DNA of which has been modified using genetic engineering methods. In most cases, the aim is to introduce a new trait to the plant which does not occur naturally in the species
Obviously there are risks and benefits and the risks should be taken somewhat cautiously. But we already do. And we already have tons of GM foods. Most foods that you eat are already likely GM. We have found that for the most part there are virtually no ill side effects.
Unfortunately it's not like we have much of a choice. We need to feed 7 billion people and 9-10 billion by 2050. At current rate we are running out of land area needed to grow crops. We can only solve that problem by technologically increasing agricultural production.
These are modifications in the genome of plants for better productivity disease resistance etc. These modifications are done through genetic engineering
Genetic engineering of plants(genetically modified plants) led to important benefits in terms of improving production and resistance to some agricultural pests, but in same time it put us at many risks.
Plant biotechnology, sometimes also referred to as green biotechnology, is often perceived as a synonym for genetically modified (GM) plants, or transgenic plants. However, plant biotechnology is much broader than the applications of genetic modification, and in fact it is a continuum of different techniques and research domains, ranging from mutagenesis, organ and tissue culture and the use of molecular markers in breeding to transgenesis.
some experiments showed GM plants that express specific proteins for the prevention of diseases in humans and animals.
also genetically modified oil seeds are able to express modified fatty acid patterns and increase of some unsaturated fatty acids are characterized by Specific health effects
Here is a brief article from PNAS. Basically there hasn't been any evidence that GMOs put human or environmental health at risk. I think people can do a lot of great and interesting things using genetic engineering. We will need to with the growing world population and climate change.
Fair judgment is required. If the objective is to solve a problem, it is OK. Combating hanger and nutritional deficiencies are good reasons. Modifying plants for better performance to biotic and abiotic stresses is very useful. In general I support the idea.
