In my opinion journal is a good option from publication point of view. But if we want to discuss our problem and we want to develop relation with other researchers then certainly conference has upper hand.
If we attend the conference, we gain many benefits, meeting and discussions with professional experts, two publications (the conference proceedings and the extended versions in the relevant journal).
Demerits
We need to arrange the trip, pay the flight, hotel and food costs. Also, we pay the time for attending it.
High reputed/high rank of the impact factor of the publications can be obtained. Also, we can submit to the some journals with no APC (free of charge).
Demerits
We need to submit the step by step procedure of the submission. Also, we need to patience to obtain the first reply, the corrections and the final acceptance. Some journals takes long time.

Participation in conferences contributes to the breadth of expertise, knowledge and discussion of participating research is very useful and explains the weaknesses to be avoided later, as well as a good opportunity to meet with colleagues.
I prefer both depend on situations. E.g. conference proceeding is good for "hot from the oven" research (because faster turnaround to be published), networking with research community, good for students studying post-graduate courses like PhD to expose themselves to published writing & viva presentation etc. Journal article is good for deeper & more complete write up that gone through rigorous review from SME / reviewers etc.
Yes, of course, from the conference, the PhD Candidates can obtain the rapid publication in the proceedings and extended version in the related journal, the opportunity to knowledge sharing with the international experts.
The research with the deep analysis are relevant to the reputed journals with the high Impact Factor.
So, do you think the rank of the journal is higher than the conference?
Not sure we can generalize journal is higher ranking than conference proceeding because they serve different objectives & also some conference proceedings are of high standard as well as some reputable / high impact factor journals. But I do notice good quality conference proceedings & journal articles are cited even though they are not from high standard / reputable conference proceedings or journal articles.
Each of which is positive, but the journal is better in terms of credibility and seriousness in the evaluation, so the research published in scientific journals for scientific promotion purposes prefer more than conference research.
In mineral exploration conferences are essential to see the results of on-going research and exploration results from the field plus to meet researchers and see their samples. The journals one can see later when published.
I prefer a conference more. The direct and face to face interaction of your work and reviewers/peers provides you with feedback and discussions where possible. After all, you can as well publish the conference proceedings later. Note needs to be taken also that a conference presentation is also peer reviewed.
But, my academic promotion seems to weigh a journal publication more.
Drawing a sharp line is difficult. I would like to attend the conference, present my paper, and discuss it with those interested. Conference would also provide me opportunity to visit a new/different place and break routine, renew contacts, meet new people, and learn from their research and discussions. But at the end of the day, I would prefer to publish my research in a journal rather than in conference proceedings. I have always learnt much more from critical reviews of journals' referees. Having said that, I have not always followed this course!
For sure both of them are cery important for building the scientific personality. Publishing in a (good and respected) journal is very important for academic career, on the other hand conferences are so important also for meeting other researchers, discussions... and so on.
Although a well discussed conference proceeding can give rise to a good journal publication, I prefer journal because of its wider acceptability and confident usability.
The preference is that of journal but once in a while I like to go for conferences where ideas are shared by others and just meet colleagues in the same field
Dear, Thanks for sharing! I understand that both have their importance in the context of productions. The conference is great because it puts us face to face with many colleagues that we often know only through the virtual world. Magazines with high weight are needed to consolidate our researcher life. Cheers!
Some told that the most of the conferences accept all, easy to attend and publish in the proceedings.
Regarding the journals, it is not easy to publish in high reputed ones,..., the waiting for the first reply,...,corrections based on the peer reviewed...,
the certain waiting times for the final acceptance....others...
I am fully agree with O A Otekunrin but personally I will prefer paper publish in journal because the research information can be circulate among the mass by the journal while paper presented or published in conference is benefited by a group only.
I do prefer the Journals for publication rather than conferences, today in most of the conferences are only for personal interaction and site seeing not for scientific discussions ( it is my personal opinion).
La publication dans la revue et la conférence sont limitées à chaque type de publique.
Mais si votre thème rentre dans le profil de la conférence, votre travail prendra plus de sens pour le plus rapide partage des conaissances, qui vous sont utiles.
We attend conferences, widen our knowledge and expertise, make friends, collaborate with like minded people, then do some good project together and then publish in an high impact journal. Frankly, I dont care for impact factor, but good collaboration do give you an upper hand to come up with better ideas. So, both conferences and journals are good :).
I personally prefer journal publications but conferences and conference proceedings have their own value. Conferences provide the perfect platform to make new acquaintances and set possible collaborations with researchers having common interests. Some people do use conferences as luxury trips but that is not the complete picture. Excellent discussions and novel ideas are important components of most conferences.
Conference of course! because you experience from "the horses'mouth" how the studies were undertaken and the challenges faced by the scientists in a conference. In a journal you can not ask questions
Both are preferable, and each one has several advantages. For example, publishing in reputable journal will create a value for your academic career and record. Conferences also add a value and academic records to me but I like conferences' more because by attending conferences, I can share my knowledge with other experts, I can also meet professional and experts from different countries in different disciplinarians, in addition to that I can expand my research networking and etc. But from economic perspective, conferences are not preferable in a way, as they are consuming a lot money especially when academician or researchers have no funding to attend conference.
I think the conference is better for networking and the journal is better for high impact of research publication.
Today, there are some conferences' proceedings published in special issues of reputed journals. However, I think these amount are lesser than the publications of the high impact factor, peer-reviewed journals.
Dear Dr. Aung Ze Ya , it depends on the situation and desire. Each of them have their own importance.
A journal is a regular periodical publication, printed say monthly or bi-monthly, containing a collection of peer reviewed papers. A high 'impact rating' helps, this being a measure of citations to articles in that journal. On the other hand, a conference is where you actually turn up to hear a paper presented as a talk. The paper is later printed in the proceedings.Proceedings are collections of papers presented at a conference and printed later.
Dear Dr. Beemnet, Many Thanks for your valuable answer.
In my opinion,...
Yes, you know, most of the author would like to cite the peer-reviewed, high impact factor journal in their references of their article. Usually, the journal is better for research reputation.
To make the strong networking, we attend the conference.
It is sure that we have one publication as the conference proceedings.
Also, there are many conferences are supported by IEEE, Elsevier (Science Direct), Springer and other reputed publishers. Then, the selected or many papers will be published in these.
If so, we can obtain two publications by attending the conferences.
However, if the researcher can't pay the times and want to save the travel costs and other barriers, he can submit to the journals.
