I know that what you expect of students is generally what you will get from students. I have high expectations of my students, giving them challenging assignments (like being a prosecutor or defense attorney in a mock trial, preparing an entire case) and and communicating my confidence in them during class. And most students put in a lot of work into my assignments in response and do better than I thought they would going in. But if students see that professors don't expect a great deal of critical thinking, they don't put a whole lot into their work and perform lower than their actual ability level.
