This is a very good question. Many supervisors do not do thorough job in checking the submitted thesis,whereas, it tells when such students find themselves in academic line, later in the future.

Your pieces of advice are concise but wonderful.

first, we need to teach them how to identify plagiarism by showing different examples of plagiarism

Then we need to teach them how to correctly cite sources.

Ask them to write an article, or a report.

Also, we must always run their writeups with plagiarism software. Kudos to some institutions nowadays for checking this before the University finally approves such theses.

Get them enrolled in a course on Plagiarism (MOOC) and assign them a small project.

When I am expecting a report from the students, I inform them that a similarity check software will be used to check their work for plagiarism. Telling them that plagiarism is bad is not enough.
