With the current availability easy access to information online, students in higher education and school education are more in favour of checking online resources such as those on Wikipedia or YouTube? Do your students use these resources rather than academic resources or recommended textbooks? How do you handle such change?
Some need other vehicles to allow them to adequately assess new material. This is not bad given the alternative that they would do nothing otherwise.
Yes they do, buts it's our duty to point their attention to other veritable sources of genuine information
I believe most people get information from wikipedia or Youtube. But as mentioned, it is important for students to become familiar with resources accuracy, relevance and other topics. This way, they will know WHAT information is got and how to benefit from it.
In fact, I welcome diversity in the sources of scientific research, but not be substitute for the textbooks and academic method, but help because I believe in the development of learning methods and scientific knowledge so I encourage students to take advantage of the Internet and I resort to him in the preparation of lectures and modern forms and drawings but do not consider it an alternative On the scientific literature methodological academy ... Yes, many of them do. Students may use them as alternative sources of information. But this doesn't rule out that major sources, textbooks as references. Excessive use of internet material is not advisable.
I teach the introductory biology sequence to potential majors at my institution. While we have a required text, I find that sometimes processes are much easy to visualize when viewing a video on YouTube or seeing it explained in a manner different from what is in the text. I include not only YouTube videos in my lectures, but public radio excerpts and other multimedia to help increase understanding. In our course, we do advise students on how to choose sources and making sure these sources are reputable. And many of the videos I show come from either the National Science Case Study Center, HHMI Biointeractive, or other reliable sources, so that students know they can visit these channels on youtube/websites for helpful info. My thought is that this information is out there, we can't change that fact, and its presence gives us a teaching opportunity to show students how to reliably check sources and where to find the best information. For the most part, from my experience, I see students using online resources as a way to complement the required text and lecture material.
