My manuscript was accepted in an Elsevier journal on Sep. 26, 2018. The corrected proof is available online since Oct. 5, 2018 but I haven't received the final version yet. At the same time, I see more recent publications that are available as final versions. What could be the reasons?

I think the edition issue under which your paper was listed could be different from the one you saw. I suggest you write the Editor-in-Chief.

Many journals have a list of papers that were accepted, but still on line for publication (they do not have a volume and issue yet). This is sometimes due to overload of articles in one journal, that publishes every issue with a certain number of papers. You could check if the journal has a "first online" section, and see if your paper is included in this line.

Please note we may forward accepted papers for legal review if appropriate.
After acceptance, it currently takes 1 week to get a citable, uncorrected draft of the article online, another 4-5 weeks to get the final corrected article online, and a few weeks later this is compiled into an online volume and issue. The print copy follows 2-3 weeks later.
The order of acceptance is not the same order of publication in many journals. Sometimes, the editors have a hidden agenda to limit certain research topics and priority research topics for each issue. If your accepted article is outside this agenda, it will prolong to allocate volume number.
If large number of articles are accepted in a particular period time which exceed the number of articles for several forthcoming issues, it will certainly delay the allocation of volume number.
If additional statements or alteration of figures or changes in authorship are done in the proof of the article, it will require approval and further inquiry by the editor which will delay the publication.
If any of the coauthors expressed a conflict of interest to the editor after acceptance of the article, it will take long time for publication.
