In general, conflicts are the fault, to varying degrees, of both parties. War is an horrendous crime, in my view. However, here we have a very rare situation where one nation, Ukraine, is completely innocent, and another, Russia, is engaged in a war of territorial expansion. Russia started an invasion, and Russia can stop it. Ukraine is only fighting back, defending herself. If Russia claims it will just take a certain amount of territory and stop, that may just be a ploy to restock and attack again.
There are likely three ways this might end: (1) Ukraine expels the invaders, (2) Russia leaves, or (3) Russia occupies Ukraine. The third is not likely because Ukrainians are motivated and completely in the right. If it did happen, the Russians would likely be harassed until the day they gave up and left.
(Note that this is entirely my individual opinion, but I am certain that very many other people in the world have come to the same realization, as it is completely obvious.)
The situation is complex to say the least. Undoubtedly one country invaded another, and this has matters in terms of international law, human rights, etc. But what were the causes and root causes for this? How did it evolve over the past three decades and how has history between the two countries influenced the current situation? This is seemingly a reoccurring matter. For example Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kosovo, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Iraq- Iran, Israel-Palestine, etc. In other words this is seemingly a reoccurring type of matter that creates and ignites conflict. In very simplistic terms it is the rights of minorities versus the rights of majorities within national state borders. Could a possible solution be found peacefully or will the end game be decided on who wins the war? However if the war is won, for example, by one or the other side, the problem will still remain, as it will not be solved as it would basically mean that one side has the upper hand over the other. But for how long before another war ignites? see for example the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. First Armenia had the upper hand in Nagorno Karabakh, now it is Azerbaijan, but will this solve the root cause and causes of the matter? It seems to be doubtful.
An interesting book on war is provided by Organski and Kugler, published in 1980 and is called ' The war ledger'. see link
I understand this, Martin, but for Putin this is just an excuse to take everything. This isn't so complex as World War I. Its more like demand for appeasement at the beginning of WWII. This war is not justified in the slightest. Let's not let anyone pretend that it is. War is not an answer, and this one was started by a bully. Russia started it. Russia can stop it. Period.
In my view, a range of different motivations are at play in the Russia-Ukraine war, but their strength is different.
But what Russia refers to as the hidden and obvious motive for the attack on Ukraine is the mysterious, secret and strategic movements of NATO on Russia's borders. In any case, Russia, as a superpower, has been monitoring the growth of Western control and monitoring systems in its neighboring countries for years, and it may have experienced a critical situation in this regard in recent years and unfortunately made this wrong move. .
Of course, the West already knew that Russia's patience is limited and that Putin will get himself into trouble sooner or later! So what the West expected happened and a well was dug in Ukraine to destroy the Russian economy.
Maybe Russia did not imagine that many western countries would come to Ukraine's aid freely, so its calculations were not correct in predicting the duration of this war. In my opinion, all this was predicted by the West.
In fact, the West predicted that in the current situation, Russia would not be able to wait for the gradual acceptance of NATO in its neighboring countries, and therefore, by further provoking Russia, it would achieve the goal of weakening Russia's economy.
In fact, the Westerners went to a full-scale war with Russia using proxy forces in a country bordering Russia without using any soldiers!
Now Russia is condemned in the international community for attacking an innocent country, and America is praised worldwide as the main savior of that country! Isn't this western policy amazing?!
How can peace be achieved in this situation? Perhaps, for example, this is a way of making peace:
- The leading and neutral countries should seriously act quickly and establish a comprehensive ceasefire first.
- America and NATO member countries, in order to create and maintain world peace, pledge to reduce the expansion and concentration of NATO in Russia's borders.
- According to an agreement, Russia and Ukraine should expand their political, economic and cultural relations, and Ukraine should no longer get caught up in Western games and promises, and should know that Westerners only care about their own interests!
The world community should know, this war has no winner! And unfortunately, the main losers are the cultured people of both Ukraine and Russia, who lose their future, economy and capital in this war.
The most important issue remained:
What is the role of the United Nations here? When does this organization want to be effective in such issues and play its main role for the world with an impartial view?
