I am in the midst of doing a large scale study using serial transmission electron microscopy. It would be helpful if we had a scanning EM here at Texas A&M but we do not have one currently. We have also used Renovo as an alternative but I wonder if any of you have a better suggestion?

That all depends on which method you are wanting to use. In the case of doing in-situ automated block face imaging, look at the Gatan 3View system. It is compatible with a number of SEM's. If however you will do manual serial sectioning I would recommend the Zeiss platform because of the Atlas software for automation of image acquisition and subsequent handling of the data. It also depends what scale you are working at, a FIB-SEM can also be used but is generally restricted to small areas. In terms of the SEM the two most important factors are some kind of charge compensation system and a high sensitivity low kV backscatter detector.
