Also some wise people says about Skills " Use it or Lose it"
Publication has become necessary to measure and evaluate performance of teachers in higher institutions. Promotion, grant, scholarship and a new and better jobs are secured based on the quality and quantity of publications you possess. Academic career is built by number of publications, make your career by publishing articles or mar your career by refusing to publish. It is indeed publish or parish.
For active academics, publication is a common activity derived from teaching work. Any student work can generate a scientific publication. A master or doctoral thesis can provide between 2 and 5 publications, depending on the research depth. Therefore, the phrase has a normal meaning in the activities of academic researchers. Even after retiring the publication may serve to prevent brain aging. Publication is excellent for mental health, for it is better than to perish.
It is actually a phrase used in the academic space to get academics and researchers on their toes concerning increasing number fruitful and productive research outputs.
The craze for churning out of research outputs in terms of paper publications is really bring down the quality of publications. Everybody wants to get promotion by all means and can publish where they pay high article publication charges (APC) but with lowest quality of publication. I utterly agree with the submission of Dr. Abdelrahman Ibrahim Abushouk on this issue. Thank you.
Generally every researcher is supposed to publish number of research papers annually due to many requirements. In my opinion it should be taken like this 'either publish your research otherwise it will become too late, some other researcher is ready to publish similar work'. But I would like to add if someone is really a good researcher and can develop innovative things/device then he/she must opt for a patent, no need to publish.
Publish or perish has been a very important guiding force influencing those involved in the academic context in much of the world. The phrase has long been used as an evaluation criterion denoting the importance of publishing and publication of academic work as a prelude to advancing one's academic career. The reason is that publications are a crucial metrics for assessing a scholar's worth . Notably, a publication is a concrete document exposing the author to the sharp edges of review and criticism. Therefore, regardless of its stressful impact on the world of academia , the phrase blows vitality into the wonderful world of scientific research and experimentation.
The phrase publish or perish dates all the way back to 1942, when a sociologist named Logan Wilson used it in a book studying academia as a career. In my opinion, it is an motivational phrase for researchers as the phrase is coined to describe the pressure in academia to rapidly and continually publish academic work to sustain or further one's career.
