What can be done to increase the stability of a thiosugar in E.Coli for screening?

I will be doing a cell sorting to screen using a thiosugar as substrate. Can anyone suggest a method to make the thiosugar stable once inside E.Coli.

First of all let me ask you what is the sugar whose thio form you are using? Secondly, if I presume it is glucose (difficult to make a thiosugar of it) then it will not be affected by any means in side the cell.
