I have been fascinated by the following quote and its consequences for classroom learning/teaching : "Bildung is what remains after we have forgotten everything we have learnt." - Ellen Key (cited in Steinsholt and Dobson, Bildung. Introduction to an opaque educational landscape, published in Norwegian, 2011).

The debate on "bildung" is sometimes thought to concern solely non-English speakers, but I think this unnecessarily narrows the debate; especially if bildung is translated to simply mean liberal arts education.
