Considering the large investment in cancer research what do you see as some of the emerging home runs? Are some areas particularly exciting to you currently? Where is cancer research going during the past 2 years that seems most important and highest impact?
Cancer Epigenetics and Kinases are the two most explored areas in the last two decades.
Meanwhile the hypoxia, angiogenesis, evasion of immune function and physical status (like pH) in cancer taking much attention in the recent past.
Cancer immunology and cancer genetics as they will be the most important tools in therapeutic decision process in the future.

Cancer is a very complex and multifaceted disease . The molecular mechanisms at its origins are known coarsely or very little. This prevents us to act promptly when you could probably nip in the bud the progression of the disease. Intervening when the disease is clinically evident ( which happens often ) is the worst way with much less chance of success . If exciting does not mean fashionable areas of research, then I think the molecular basis at the origin of the cancer process represent an area of great interest even if the risk you spend a lot of time before to understand something is very high. I think that at the origins of all there should be an alteration of circadian mechanisms that regulate metabolism (and therefore the life cycles) of all living beings which exist on this earth and are closely adapted to circadian controllers. These early alterations may lead to unpredictable and different biological mechanisms with large metabolic resonances. The relationships between food and circadian rithms are still unkown and because it is now very well clear that we are what we eat, the starting point would be there. An astonishing example is a recent article by P. Sassone-Corsi, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24360271, where just simple and temporally short changes in the way of eating leads to consequences never before imaginable.
