There has lately been a lot of attention given to the exploitative nature of large publishers such as Nature, Science, and Cell. They are monopolizing our scientific communities. Moreover, journals like Nature Comm, Science Advances, and Cell Reports charge $5000 for a publication fee.
What are your favorite journals outside of these sensationalized publishers? Are there some that hold promise to be reputable and have a comparable impact to Nature, Cell, and Science family journals?
Hi Sammy - it depends on your interpretation of exploitative. Also - these journals do not monopolise my scientific community. My discipline is public health - and that's not really what these journals are about. I'm not sure if your question is more about 'alternative' journals charge a publishing fee? Are you looking for a very high impact journal that doesn't charge open access fees?
In terms of highly competitive and established scientific journals, I would imagine that researchers 'favourite' interpretation will vary widely i.e. those that have been successful in publishing in the likes of Nature and highly cited (or not) - through to those that have published in the likes of Cell Report (for a fee) and well cited.
