Since you have mentioned "Data analysis" the most important tool would be : Probability & Statistics .

Eg: you would like to see the pattern in terms of correlation , or look at variance or check for it skew and so on.

I use a combination of signal processing (digital ) to analog that covers stats .

Simple tools to verify your theory : Excel /R /Matlab and may more free software

What are the important factors to be considered before choosing an analytical tool or procedure for a research?

You might want to consider the following factors to determine which analytical tool(s) to use in your research:

Conceptual framework / research model - how the independent, latent & dependent variables being positioned & connected in the conceptual framework / research model can influence what analytical tools to use .e.g multiple regression, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) etc.

Research questions / hypotheses - for some theses / articles without conceptual framework / research model, how the research questions / hypotheses were worded also influence what tools to use e.g. testing for mediation effect, moderating effect, analysis of variance to compare groups etc.

How questions were developed in the questionnaire to collect what kind of data - for example, interval & ratio data will use parametric statistics e.g. T-test, Pearson Correlation test etc. whereas nominal & ordinal data will use non-parametric statistics e.g. Chi-square test, Spearman Rho Correlation test etc.

Initial result findings - when certain initial tests failed, some researchers might consider other analytical technique e.g. when Kolmogorov-Smirnov test failed to support data are normally distributed, some researchers might explore other tests e.g. Skewness & Kurtosis, Histogram, Stem & Leaf Plot, Boxplot etc.

New ideas to run new data analysis - sometimes, some researchers might change their pre-planned analytical techniques e.g. after additional literature review or additional input from other researchers / supervisors etc., the researcher might add control variables into the research model before conducting the SEM.

Generally speaking, the type of research topic, variables and the data related to them decide the methodological framework for the study.More specifically, several factors determine the choice of an appropriate research method. They are:

1) Theoretical considerations: theories defining positivists versus interpretivists concerns have a direct bearing on selecting the analytical tools needed for conducting a particular research , which vary for quantitative and qualitative research methods.

2) Practical considerations: Address such issues as the time , cost, logistics, sampling, ethical problems , etc.

3) Nature of the Topic under investigation may also impact the choice of methodological frameworks.

All in all, the journey to insightful research necessitates specific personal skills and decisions which the researcher has to foresee tactfully.
