Powdery mildew disease which caused by the Ascomycetes fungus Erysiphe pisi, is one of the fungal diseases of Lathyrus ( grasspea ). This fungus causes a powdery spots on both surfaces of plant leaves.
Downy mildew disease which caused by the Oomycetes fungus Peronospora lathipalustris also is one of the diseases of Lathyrus (grasspea). This fungus causes a yellow spots on the upper leaf surface and a downy or fluffy filaments on the lower surface of leaves.
The Necrosis which caused by the Coellomycetes fungus Ascochyta lentis is also one of the recent fungal diseases of lathyrus (Grasspea). This fungus causes necrotic lesions on leaves and stems of grasspea plants.
Lathyrus sativus L. (Grasspea) is considered as a source of protein and as an important source of disease resistance for several important legume crops such as Ascochyta blight of pea which caused by the fungus Peyronellaea pinodes.
Foot and root rot disease which caused by the fungus Sclerotium rolfsii is another fungal disease of grasspea ( Lathyrus sativus ). This fungus causes a rot of roots and foot of plant.
The studies showed that, grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) has high protein content and resistance to extreme environmental conditions, such as drought, salinity and low fertility, and resistance to biotic agents such as some pathogenic fungi and diseases.
Actually, grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is considered as one of the most promising sources of calories and protein for the expanding populations of drought-prone and marginal areas of Asia and Africa. It is a dual purpose crop with great agronomic potential as a grain and forage legume plant.
